IPhone-like support: 6-year-old Fairphone 2 gets Android update

Dutch company Fairphone, known for its modular smartphones, has announced an Android update for Fairphone 2, presented in 2015. As a reminder, Fairphone’s long-term support and easy repairs are the hallmark of a company committed to reducing e-waste.

It is worth noting that Fairphone 2 will not receive the current Android 12, but Android 10, presented in 2019. However, this is great news for the owners of the smartphone, which debuted in 2015 with Android 5 on board and has since received three major OS updates, skipping Android 8. Beta testing of the latest firmware based on Android 10 has already begun, and the company expects release a stable version of the software by early 2022.

It should be noted that most of the leading manufacturers of Android devices offer no more than three major OS updates for branded smartphones. In terms of support, Fairphone is not inferior to Apple, which keeps up to date the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, presented in the same 2015.

Fairphone 2 is based on the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core chipset with a maximum clock speed of 2.26 GHz. It works in conjunction with 2 GB of RAM. The storage capacity is 32 GB. The device has a 5-inch IPS-display with Full HD resolution. The main camera of the smartphone is represented by one 8-megapixel sensor. The front camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels. Fairphone 2 is powered by a 2420 mAh battery.
