In March last year, the Intel Corporation announced its intention to spend up to 80 billion euros over the next ten years to set up new companies and research centers in Europe. Italy was listed in this plan as a location for the chip testing and packaging company. Now CEO Patrick Gelsinger is not so sure whether such a company will be located in Italy.
According to an interview with Corriere della Sera Reutersthe head of Intel recently said: “Italy is still in the game, but there are other candidate countries. We will make a decision within a year.”. Intel officials commented on this statement to Reuters as follows: “We continue to negotiate with Italy about the construction of a modern chip processing plant. This is a separate project from all others in the region related to testing and packaging which have not yet chosen locations or dates. ”.
Patrick Gelsinger also explained in his interview that he recently spoke on the phone with the new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to some reports, her predecessor in this post, Mario Draghi, managed to discuss many of the nuances of the project for building an enterprise in Italy, but he did not finish the work. A new government led by George Meloni came to power in the country in October. In December, she expressed her willingness to meet with Intel management to discuss a project to set up a company in Italy, which she believes is strategic for the country. The Italian authorities also became aware of the start of an in-depth study by Intel on investment prospects in neighboring France and Germany. Economics Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti agreed on Wednesday to provide financial support for Intel’s initiatives in Italy.
