Patent data aggregator IFI Claims has published a ranking of companies by the number of patents received in the United States in 2021. Over the past year, IBM has grown its intellectual property portfolio the most, far surpassing Samsung and Canon, which finished second and third, respectively.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted 8,682 patents to IBM last year, according to IFI Claims Patent Services. Samsung and Canon received 6366 and 3021 patents respectively. The top five also included TSMC and Huawei. The first was granted 2798 and the second 2770 patents. Intel, Apple, LG and Microsoft ranked sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth with 2615, 2541, 2478 and 2418 patents respectively. Qualcomm closes the top ten with 2149 patents.
evaluation IFI Claims 2021 Global 250 shows the world’s largest patent holders. Samsung leads the ranking with 90,416 active patents. The second place belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences – 78,415 patents. The Chinese household appliance manufacturer Midea closes the top 3 with 58,495 patents. The top ten patent holders include well-known technology companies such as Huawei (fourth place, 48,307 patents), IBM (eighth place, 41,937 patents), Canon (ninth place, 40,706 patents) and Panasonic (tenth place, 37,538 patents).
