Housemarque’s next game will adopt Returnal’s unrealized ideas and storytelling systems

Housemarque will bring ideas and storytelling that weren’t in Returnal to their next project. Senior Narrative Designer Eevi Korhonen talked about it. Previously, Housemarque announced the development of a new intellectual property in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In an interview with VGC, Korhonen said that Returnal is a very ambitious game, but many ideas and storytelling systems had to be abandoned in the making. Nevertheless, the time spent on them was not in vain: they will be used by the studio’s next project.

“We didn’t quite understand how big it was going to be. [Returnal], building a new platform on a new engine with a new team, all these things have to be learned. Now we have this team that went through fire and learned how to make a game like Returnal. So now we can start [новый проект] with experience”said Korhonen.

The Senior Narrative Designer also shared the lessons the team learned while creating the first major story-driven game. Now the studio knows how difficult it is to implement many of the features in a roguelike, including storytelling.

In Returnal, the narrative unfolds through short clips that play as you die and return to your ship. But there are also longer story sections in the game that take place in a house in the middle of the first area. However, no people are herded into this house, so much of the Returnal property can pass through. Housemarque’s goal was to give players choice, but also to spark their interest in learning about history.

What is known about the new project Housemarque is that it will be a big game to be released on the PlayStation 5 since Sony Interactive Entertainment bought the studio two months after the release of Returnal.
