Hitman 3’s Success and Transition to Independence Helps IO Interactive Reach Record Annual Profits

Danish studio IO Interactive published a statement of financial results for the last fiscal year. Between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021, the company earned the largest profit in its history, helped by the success of Hitman 3.

In fiscal 2021, IO Interactive had a net profit of DKK 270.7 million ($ 42 million), up from DKK 11.6 million ($ 1.8 million) in 2020. Hitman 3 played a major role in improving performance, with sales exceeding the original forecast by 300%. The latter is explained, among other things, by exclusive deals, for which the company received certain amounts: the PC version was released only in Epic Games Storeand the VR version is exclusively for PlayStation VR. Separately, it is emphasized that the third part of the trilogy was rated higher than the previous two.

In addition, IO Interactive associates the increase in performance with the growth in sales of previous Hitman games, interest in which increased due to the release of the newest, the transition to independence (Hitman 3 is the first game that the company released on its own) and the strengthening of the gaming market amid the COVID pandemic. 19.

Now IO Interactive is engaged in at least two new projects: the stealth action Project 007 about James Bond (which may become a trilogy) and an unannounced game in another universe, which the studio’s veterans have long dreamed of creating. According to rumors, the second could be a fantasy RPG with dragons for Microsoft. In addition, the team will continue to release new content for Hitman 3, including premium expansions.

Hitman 3 was released on January 20, 2021 on PC, two generations of PlayStation and Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia. The media received the game warmly: the rating of versions for large platforms on Metacritic was 84–87 / 100 (the technically imperfect Switch-variant scored only 70 points). Many publications called the new part one of the best in the series and noted an unprecedented variety of levels and possibilities. Some were unhappy with the number of innovations.

In his review for 3DNews, Mikhail Ponomarev rated Hitman 3 at 7/10. “Catharsis did not happen – the ending of the trilogy turned out to be crumpled and blurred, – he wrote. – However, outside of the plot context, most of the Hitman 3 levels came out right. “

In April, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak revealed that Hitman 3 paid off in its first week, and its sales were 300% higher than Hitman 2.

Hitman 3 has completed the World of Assassination trilogy, but will not be the last game in the series. Studio plans someday return to work on the franchise and significantly change the gameplay formula.
