Hackers started attacking IT companies more and more frequently – this allows them to later attack their customers

The number of cyber attacks fell by 5% in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the previous quarter. Despite this, the number of recorded incidents in a three-month period is 15% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2021. It should be noted that attackers have an increased interest in companies from the IT sector. The number of attacks against IT organizations increased by 18% in the quarter, with 62% of attacks involving malicious software such as ransomware designed to steal sensitive data and collect ransoms. Positive Technologies explained that such attacks are particularly beneficial for hackers because when IT companies are compromised, attackers can target their customers – users of various products and services.

The report states that hackers prefer to target users via instant messengers and social networks. In the fourth quarter of last year, 19% of attacks targeted social network users, and 17% of attacks using social engineering methods used messengers and SMS messages. “Most attacks on social networks and messengers aim to collect credentials and hack accounts, and compromised accounts are used for further attacks on users.”said Positive Technologies in a statement.

The company noted that the fourth quarter was marked by several high-profile data leaks. When attacking organizations, hackers focused on data theft 38% of the time, and were interested in objects constituting a trade secret 20% of the time.
