Google unveils Pixel Fold – “the thinnest foldable smartphone” for $1799

Google today announced its first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, as planned, in a presentation during the opening of the Google I/O conference. The company presented a new product a week ago and has now announced its characteristics and price.

The Pixel Fold has a 5.8-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch main screen that folds inward. Both use OLED panels with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for HDR. The more compact screen has a resolution of 2092 × 1080 pixels and supports a brightness of up to 1550 cd/m²2while the internal screen is 2208 × 1840 pixels and up to 1450 cd/m²2.

The Pixel Fold is based on the Google Tensor G2 processor, which has two Cortex-X1 cores (2.85 GHz), two Cortex-A76 cores (2.35 GHz) and four Cortex-A55 cores (1.8 GHz ) combined. The Mali-G710 MC10 accelerator is available for graphics processing. There is also a built-in 5G modem. The same processor is used in the flagship Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. The chip is supplemented by 12 GB of RAM. The size of the integrated flash memory is 256 or 512 GB, depending on the version.

The smartphone received a 4800 mAh battery and support for fast charging with a power of only 30 watts. There is also support for wireless charging.

The Pixel Fold has a total of five cameras. There are two 8.3 MP selfie cameras – one on the outer display for selfies and one on the inner display for video calls. There are also three cameras on the back: a 48MP main camera with OIS, a 10.8MP wide-angle camera, and a 10.8MP telephoto camera with 5x zoom. The camera features and capabilities are similar to the Pixel 7 Pro, but the sensors are different on the Fold – Google couldn’t fit the 7 Pro’s larger sensors into the Fold’s thin frame.
