Google has been looking for partners for the production of Pixel smartphones in India, using Apple’s tactics to diversify production of its devices outside of China. How informed Citing informed sources, Bloomberg said Google has entered into negotiations on the issue with a number of local companies, including Lava International and Dixon Technologies India, as well as the Indian division of Foxconn Technology Group Bharat FIH.
Google executives visiting India this month for partnership talks included Ana Corrales, chief operating officer of the consumer equipment division, and Maggie Wei, Google’s senior director of global operations, sources said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is touting India as an alternative to China for manufacturing as more companies seek to reduce reliance on China amid the trade war with the United States and China’s coronavirus lockdown.
The Indian government is committing significant sums to boost production as part of a strategy aimed at making India one of the world’s leading electronics markets. Specifically, Apple used the stimulus package to expand its sourcing base in India, tripling its local iPhone production by value to more than $7 billion in fiscal 2023, which ended in March 2023.
Bloomberg sources believe that shifting manufacturing to India could help Google boost Pixel sales, and if successful, the company could shift production of other devices like speakers to that country as well.
