Google has launched initiatives to help people and organizations reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere

Google told about new functions of its search system and other services that are aimed at an expanded presentation of environmentally relevant information. The company will talk more about the technical characteristics of electric vehicles, offer efficient routing and more information about greener routes, provide AI functions to optimize traffic lights and much more.

When searching for information about electric vehicles, Google users are provided with a wealth of information about each individual model, including the ability to qualify for government subsidies and tax breaks – this data is already available in the US before the end of the year it will be available in France and Germany. The search engine allows you to more accurately calculate the range of an electric vehicle, taking into account specific conditions and many factors. A charging consumption calculator and the ability to compare specific fuel costs for combustion engine cars and electric vehicles are also available in 21 countries worldwide. Users in India and Indonesia can now also plan routes based on terrain and traffic to save fuel or battery power.

For those who prefer alternative means of transport, new navigation tools have appeared – for example, with the support of the operator Transport for London, hundreds of cycle paths have appeared on the map of the British capital. And in France it will be possible to plan movements not only with your own car, but also to plan a route using public transport and on foot, if this method proves to be comparable in time – this function is currently only being tested.

Google has decided to strengthen its presence in the aviation segment. Previously, the company launched a joint project with American Airlines and Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Foundation to develop less polluting flight routes to reduce the amount of contrails. Now the organization EUROCONTROL, which works with European airlines, has joined the project – it will advise pilots on how to reduce this effect.

Another initiative is the “Project Green Light” program, which aims to increase the efficiency of traffic light control using artificial intelligence algorithms. It is estimated that air pollution at signalized intersections is up to 29 times higher than on open roads. Project Green Light’s AI algorithms help road workers set up traffic lights to minimize the number of stops for moving cars. According to Google, the tools required for this are extremely easy to implement and can be implemented in just a few minutes. As the test results of the system in several cities show, the number of stops can be reduced by 30%. The Green Light project is now being launched in Rio de Janeiro, Manchester, Jakarta and Budapest – more than ten cities in total, with more to be added by the end of the year.

When searching for household appliances, Google users are shown information about the possibility of using environmentally friendly alternatives that offer government subsidies and tax breaks. The Cool Roofs tool on the Google Earth platform helps you design buildings more efficiently while taking into account the possibility of installing solar panels on roofs. It will be available in 15 new cities in the coming weeks.

The company talked about tools to reduce the impact of natural disasters. For example, the Flood Hub tool, designed to warn about floods, is used in the coastal areas of 80 countries, home to 12 million people, and now also works in the United States and Canada. Since 2020, Google has been working with US authorities to display maps of the spread of wildfires in near real time. There’s also a tool called Tree Canopy that helps communities identify places to plant plants – the tool is being expanded to 2,000 new cities around the world.

Finally, Google began redesigning its data centers to reduce its environmental impact. Company information shows that demand for AI computing is growing slower than data center capacity is increasing. Therefore, Google is intensifying the development and implementation of AI accelerators that help improve the energy efficiency of resources. Google’s complexes are, by its own estimates, 1.5 times more energy efficient than average corporate data centers – while the company is actively transitioning to carbon-free energy resources.
