GM won’t resume production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV electric vehicle until April at the earliest

Last August, General Motors, an American company, was forced to recall Chevrolet Bolt EV electric vehicles manufactured between 2017 and 2021 because of possible defective LG Energy Solution traction batteries that needed to be replaced. The production of cars has been suspended, and the company will not be able to resume them until the beginning of April at the earliest.

This time as it is electric, deviating from GM’s originally planned – earlier expected – to resume production of electric vehicles from this family at the end of January. The Ohio plant will now not resume production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV until early April at the earliest. Under the current circumstances, GM is prioritizing the replacement of batteries on electric vehicles already sold and produced, and the assembly line will be supplied with them last. Incidentally, actual car sales will resume shortly before the start of production, and all new copies will be fitted with batteries from new batches.

Recall that a manufacturing defect in LG batteries caused several Chevrolet Bolt EVs to catch fire, but GM has decided to recall all vehicles manufactured since 2017 for battery replacement. As a temporary measure, the company programmatically limited the charge and discharge levels of traction batteries, but this was no longer necessary after the batteries were replaced. This generation of Chevrolet EVs is unlikely to stay around for long, as the new Ultium platform will breathe life into more promising models like the Blazer EV and Equinox EV. The battery replacement scandal is sure to ruin the reputation of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, and after formally fulfilling commitments to customers, Chevrolet will try to switch to new models as soon as possible.
