The upcoming flagship graphics card GeForce RTX 3090 Ti will be equipped with a special adapter for connecting to the power supply. According to leaks, the accelerator’s TDP is 450 watts. Using two 8-pin connectors is not sufficient as this configuration can only transmit up to 375W of power (2 x 150W and 75W via the PCIe slot).

One of the main differences between the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti and the GeForce RTX 3090 is their power connectors. The GeForce RTX 3090 model released in 2020 uses a 12-pin connector without four additional signal channels. The graphics card itself comes with an adapter with two 8-pin connectors on one end and a 12-pin connector on the other. Taking into account the PCIe connector of the motherboard, this configuration, even with a margin, delivers the necessary 350 W of power, declared for the GeForce RTX 3090 from NVIDIA.
The TDP of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is 100W higher. Therefore, the use of three 8-pin connectors with the transition to a new 12 + 4 connector (12VHPWR 2.0) is required. Or a native power cord with a 12VHPWR 2.0 connector is suitable, which will be included in new generation power supplies with support for PCIe 5.0 graphics cards. However, the mass distribution of such power supplies is expected no earlier than the release of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti itself, which, as you recall, is scheduled to take place on March 29. For this reason, an adapter is required for the “old” power supplies.
This adapter allows you to transfer up to 450W of power to the graphics accelerator, or 525W of total power, taking into account the PCIe connector on the motherboard. It is very likely that non-reference versions of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti will also be launched, with a TDP of 500 watts. Remember that according to the specifications of the new ATX 3.0 standard, up to 600W of power can be transmitted to the graphics card through the 12+4 pin 12VHPWR 2.0 connector.
The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card is based on the GA102-350 GPU with 10,752 CUDA cores. It is the first graphics card with GDDR6X memory of up to 21 Gbps. At the same time, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti will be the last graphics card in the Ampere series. Later this year, the announcement of a new generation of NVIDIA graphics accelerators based on the Ada Lovelace architecture is expected.
