Ford is ready to use LFP batteries in the current generation of electric vehicles

Iron phosphate-based lithium batteries eliminate the use of nickel and cobalt, which have risen sharply in price, becoming one of the factors drawing the attention of electric vehicle manufacturers. Ford Motor has not shied away from this trend, as the company’s boss admitted to conducting experiments with LFP batteries.

This statement as explained electric, did Ford CEO Jim Farley at the quarterly reporting conference when asked to share his thoughts on iron-phosphate batteries. According to him, Ford has been doing relevant research for some time. The company concluded that the use of LFP batteries in the first generation of electric vehicles will allow it to enter increasing production volumes quickly enough.

In fact, this indicates Ford’s willingness to equip LFP batteries, if necessary, not only with F-150 Lightning pickups, but also with Mustang Mach-E crossovers. The company is expected to produce at least 150,000 pickups in the next year alone, so additional battery sources will be needed to significantly increase production volume. In this situation, the option of using LFP batteries should not be ruled out, since they allow you to create initial versions of electric vehicles at a lower cost. The rise in nickel prices has already resulted in price hikes across the model ranges of most major EV manufacturers, so switching part of the range to LFP batteries will help keep initial configurations price attractive.
