Ford and SK innovation to jointly build a traction battery plant in Europe

The end of the patent conflict with LG Energy Solution encouraged SK innovation to actively collaborate with leading car manufacturers. In the United States, its main ally is Ford Motor, which will also help a Korean supplier build a new facility in Eastern Europe.

The partners have already announced their intentions to build factories for the production of batteries for electric vehicles in the United States, but the European initiative became public only with the filing of the publication Business Korea… SK innovation already has two plants in Hungary and expects to launch a third by 2028, but Ford Motor will help it expand its production base on the continent.

According to the Korean source, Hungary, Romania and Poland are considered as the likely location for the construction of the new enterprise. There are already two SK innovation companies in the first country, and a third is under construction. Ford Motor manufacturing facilities operate in two other countries. As you know, the specificity of the production of electric vehicles implies the geographical proximity of car assembly lines and enterprises for the production of lithium batteries. All three countries meet this criterion.

If the American site of the joint venture can annually produce up to 60 GWh of equivalent battery capacity, then the European site should produce three times more. Collectively, Ford Motor can receive from its collaboration with SK innovation batteries with a combined capacity of 240 GWh annually. A European enterprise can cost partners about $ 10 billion, they must share the costs in equal proportions.
