Final PCIe 6.0 specification adopted – first products available in 1-2 years

The PCI-SIG, which is responsible for the development of PCI-based data transmission standards, announced the adoption of the final specifications for the PCIe 6.0 standard.

The new standard was adopted less than three years after the introduction of the current PCIe 5.0 standard and is the next step in the development of interfaces for high performance computing (HPC) systems, data centers, AI and machine learning, automotive, Internet of Things , Military and space developments.

PCI-SIG identified three main characteristics of the PCIe 6.0 standard:

  • Doubling of the bandwidth via PCIe 5.0 from 32 to 64 GT / s (gigatransactions per second). In a configuration of 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes, up to 256 GB of information are provided per second;
  • Using a coding based on a fixed-size flow control block (Flit), which enables a simplified forward error correction system (FEC) with low latency, a transmission scheme with pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and a CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) algorithm to be applied to the data integrity, without sacrificing latency;
  • Backward compatible with all previous generations of PCIe standards.

The first commercial PCIe 6.0-based products are expected to hit the market in 2023-2024.
