Facebook and Ray-Ban have announced the launch of the co-developed smart glasses on September 9th. Ray-Ban posted an ad page with glasses silhouette, date 09/09/2021, mention of Facebook and the text “Subscribe now to receive release notification“.
The announcement coincides with teaser videos from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and head of the company’s virtual and augmented reality division Andrew Bosworth. In these videos, Bosworth plays golf while Zuckerberg is on a boat. Probably, in this way the company hints at the possibility of using the upcoming glasses in different scenarios.
Facebook called its glasses, developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban’s parent company, a step towards full-fledged augmented reality glasses. The latter will be advanced glasses that will improve the audiovisual perception of the surrounding world. What functions will be incorporated into them is not yet known.
In July, Zuckerberg confirmed that these upcoming Ray-Ban glasses will be the next hardware product to be unveiled by Facebook, but did not announce a launch date. However, he clarified that the glasses will receive a recognizable form factor and offer users a number of interesting options.
