Elon Musk took over the domain name ai.com from OpenAI

The web interface of the chatbot with artificial intelligence ChatGPT no longer opened at the address ai.com. Now that address leads to the website of a competitor – Elon Musk’s xAI startup.

In February, OpenAI apparently bought the domain name ai.com: Visiting this address opened the ChatGPT web interface, although there were no announcements about this. It appears that the domain has now changed hands – it has become billionaire Elon Musk, who once stood at the origins of OpenAI, who later left the company and recently founded his own startup xAI.

The new company specializes in artificial intelligence technologies and was founded for this purpose “understand the true nature of the universe”. Now, if you type ai.com in the address bar of the browser, you will get to the site x.ai, although the company of the same name has not yet achieved any significant success in its field.

Two-letter domains in the .com zone are very rare and expensive, especially when those two letters have special meanings. Last year, the domain name it.com sold for $3.8 million, and ai.com is hardly cheaper given the current AI trend.

The true owner of the domain name remains unknown, OpenAI and Elon Musk have not commented on this issue.
