portal Bloomberg announced the cancellation of several unannounced games by American publisher Wizards of the Coast (Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering) based on their fantasy franchises.
According to Bloomberg, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has decided to halt production on at least five projects. As a result, fewer than 15 employees will lose their jobs, but will be able to take up new positions within the publishing house.
“We’ve made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games that align with existing brands’ growth strategies and show the potential to grow and delight our audiences.”said Wizards of the Coast.
The company also reportedly canceled a game codenamed Jabberwocky from an in-house studio and two undisclosed projects from third-party studios that were in early production.
In 2019, Wizards of the Coast said there were “7 or 8” Games based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe, including Baldur’s Gate 3, which is currently in Early Access, and Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance.
The emphasis is on Wizards of the Coast “existing brands” may secure Dungeons & Dragons projects: Hidden Path’s big-budget open-world role-playing game and Otherside Entertainment’s Entourage game “Forgotten Realms”.
As for internal WotC studios, then call studios (formerly Tuque Games) is working on a AAA D&D game on Unreal Engine 5, Archetype Entertainment has developed a Sci-Fi RPG and Skeleton Key is yet to announce its project.
