Media corporation The Walt Disney Company announcedwhich will buy back $1.5 billion worth of Epic Games studio shares to create a new gaming and entertainment universe related to Fortnite.
This new universe will reportedly offer consumers different ways to play, watch, buy and interact with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more.
How exactly the integration with Fortnite will work is not specified, but Disney says players will be able to “create your own stories and experiences”, “show your passion in the Disney style” and share content.
According to The VergeDisney’s new initiative is reminiscent of the recent Fortnite and LEGO collaboration, which brought an in-game survival adventure with LEGO graphics.
Disney CEO Bob Iger noted that the announced collaboration marks the company’s largest investment in the gaming industry and will offer significant opportunities for growth and expansion.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first partnership between Disney and Fortnite. In recent years, a variety of Disney characters have dropped into the battle royale, and in 2020 the project even went through a whole Marvel themed season.
Fortnite is based on Unreal Engine 5 and is available free of charge. The battle royale was released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, S, Switch and Android. The launch date for the new universe has not been specified, but judging by the teaser, the wait won’t be long.
