Discounts worked: Tesla Model Y waiting times in China increased, but there were dissatisfied people

As recently noted, the Chinese market, as the largest in the world, has shown Tesla’s most willingness to offer customers discounts on their locally-produced electric vehicles. Compared to the September level, some Model 3 and Model Y models fell in price by 24%, slightly fewer cars assembled in Shanghai fell in price in Australia, South Korea and Japan. In China, after the price correction, there was an increase in the waiting time for electric vehicles ordered from Tesla.

In Japan, as added Reuters, Chinese-made cars fell 10% for the first time since 2021. In Singapore, the stimulus includes a $5,000 car license fee refund, the same amount Tesla Model Y and Model 3 buyers in that country can save by trading an ICE car. In addition, Tesla is committed to providing EV buyers with a home charger, with the customer only paying for installation and delivery services.

According to Reuters, waiting times for the four-wheel drive version of the Tesla Model Y and the version with the maximum capacity of the traction battery in China have increased by a week compared to last Friday. At the same time, the waiting times for all modifications of the Tesla Model 3 remained at the same level and also the initial version of the Tesla Model Y can be obtained one or four weeks after placing the order of the car, depending on the color and equipment.

Tesla’s plans to close the Shanghai plant this week have not changed, Reuters explains. The company continues to expect conveyor belts to be halted on some lines from Jan. 20 through the end of the month while China’s traditional Lunar New Year holiday continues. The work stoppage is used for equipment upgrade and maintenance.

The January rebate came as a surprise to many buyers of Tesla electric cars in China, and they began gathering in groups to show their dissatisfaction with the manufacturer’s pricing policy as they bought cars at higher prices in late December. Tesla officials said the company has no plans to compensate them for the difference in the cost of electric vehicles. By the end of December, Chinese authorities were giving local electric car buyers subsidies, so many who wanted to buy an electric car rushed to do so before the end of the year, but Tesla’s January rebates confused them and caused dissatisfaction.

At the same time it became knownthat Tesla has begun recruitment for a future lithium recycling facility that may be located in Texas. The company will invest $ 365 million in the project, at least 165 specialists will work in the company, another 250 people will work in construction for two years. When it will hit the market is still hard to predict, but Elon Musk has repeatedly stated the need to invest in the extraction and processing of lithium, which is needed to make traction batteries.
