Discord has cut 4% of its workforce as part of the company’s restructuring

The Discord communication service has laid off around 40 employees as part of a corporate restructuring. The layoffs affected the affiliate marketing, design, and entertainment teams. The company confirmed this information and said that it will now focus on long-term growth.

Several former Discord employees have commented on the layoffs on their X and LinkedIn accounts. For example, Jackie Chen, senior graphic designer, wrote on her LinkedIn: “Hello. After more than four years at Discord, I and many of the talented people on my team were recently fired from the marketing department. I have plenty of time at the moment, but if you know of any vacancies for mid-level senior graphic/product designers please let me know! Thank you for your attention“.

The company confirmed this move and emphasized its focus on long-term growth:Discord confirms that around 4% of our team has been made redundant as part of a reorganization of some business areas and we support those affected. We are focused on long-term business growth and our mission.“.

Last month, Discord launched Family Center, a tool to help parents keep up to date with their kids’ activities on the app. The company also introduced direct streaming of Xbox games to servers and direct messaging. In March, Discord updated its Clyde bot with OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology, allowing users to ask it for advice during a group chat.

Discord’s layoffs are part of a broader restructuring process aimed at the long-term growth of the company. However, the question remains how these layoffs will affect the moral climate within the company and its future strategy.
