Developer Forspoken praises Microsoft DirectStorage, but has yet to show significant download acceleration

Last week Microsoft promised that DirectStorage technology would herald a new era in PC gaming. One of the Forspoken developers agreed with this thesis and confirmed that in the future the download will indeed fit in a second. But not now.

Teppei Ono, CTO of Square Enix conglomerate Luminous Productions, demonstrated DirectStorage at GDC 2022, explaining that some scenes in modern games can actually load in a second, assuming you’re using a Windows 11 PC equipped with an NVMe capable SSD is equipped with higher read speeds of 5000 MB/s. Recall: DirectStorage offloads the central processor, allowing graphics to access drive resources directly. Mr. Ono didn’t show downloads in one second – it was actually 1.7, 1.9, and 2.2 seconds.

It was recognized that DirectStorage currently does not offer significant speedups compared to the classic implementation based on the Win32 API, although the increase can be observed on all drives used during the demonstration: NVMe SSD on M.2, SSD on SATA and even on the classic magnetic hard drive.

The developer attributed the slight increase in speed to the fact that the technology removes only one “bottleneck” in the system – I / O interfaces, and if developers can find others in the future, the speed of games with active DirectStorage will be higher than without.

In the case of Forspoken, the studio is currently using other methods to speed up work, such as loading scenes in the background while the user is still on the main screen. By the way, AMD announced that the game will also support the new temporal scaling technology FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 – as the developers said, the integration lasted only a week.
