Dell introduces the XPS 13 Plus laptop with the old MacBook Pro touch bar, hidden trackpad, and weird keyboard

Dell has updated one of its most popular laptops. At CES 2022, the company introduced the new XPS 13, which received the plus prefix in its name. The device combines a laconic design and controversial technical solutions that other manufacturers reject.

One of the most notable changes was the elimination of a number of function keys, replacing what the company calls “Sensory functionality”… In fact, this is a less functional analogue of the infamous TouchBar in previous generations of MacBook Pro, for which Apple has been scolded by even the most ardent of fans. However, Dell insists that its touchpad is based on a completely different philosophy. All buttons have a fixed range of functions, in contrast to Apple’s solution, which adapts to the current program. Time will tell how the introduction of such an element will affect the usability of the laptop.

Another unusual detail of the Dell XPS 13 Plus is the lack of a clearly delineated trackpad. From a design point of view, such a solution looks very interesting, of course, but its comfort remains in question. Only a certain part of the case under the keyboard responds to touch, but the position of the touchpad is no longer as noticeable as it used to be.

The keyboard has been redesigned. There is now no gap between the keys. In addition, they are arranged flush with the body panel, which may seem unusual to users and takes some getting used to. There are high-quality stereo speakers under the keyboard.

The basic version of the Dell XPS 13 Plus will be available with an Alder Lake Gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB SSD storage. The device offers users an IPS display with a resolution of 1920 × 1200 pixels without support for touch inputs. The cost for this configuration is $ 1199. For a surcharge, the buyer can choose a more powerful processor up to Core i7 Alder Lake, SSD with a capacity of up to 1 TB and a touchscreen with 4K resolution. There will also be an OLED version. Dell promises that the laptop will go on sale worldwide in the spring.
