CPU and GPU shipments fell again in the first quarter — down 40% for the year

The global PC graphics processing unit (GPU) market will reach 54.8 million units in the first quarter of 2023, down 14% sequentially and 43% year-on-year, according to a report by an analyst firm Jon Peddie Research. Shipments of central processing units (CPUs) for personal computers fell by 39% in one year.

Between 2022 and 2026, the cumulative annual rate of decline in GPU shipments will be 4.42%, and by the end of this period, the installed base will reach 2913 million units. At the same time, discrete graphics penetration will increase to 34% over the next five years. Year-over-year, GPU shipments were down 40% for desktops and 45% for laptops.

AMD’s market share rose 0.9% in the quarter, while Intel’s declined 2.9% and NVIDIA’s rose 1.96%. At the same time, AMD shipments were down 7.8%, Intel down 17.5%, and NVIDIA down 4.1%.

At the same time, the average PC had 1.2 GPUs (including total integrated and discrete graphics) in the first quarter, which is 2.2% higher than the previous quarter.

The PC CPU market was down 15.6% sequentially and 38.8% year-on-year. Volume of discrete graphics card shipments decreased 12.6% sequentially.

Analyst Jon Peddie said all suppliers had reduced inventories, so healthy market momentum should recover in the second half or towards the end of the year. Analysts forecast slight growth in the CPU and GPU market for the third and fourth quarters, but sales in the PC segment will remain low in the second quarter. Of the top three vendors, NVIDIA was the best at liquidating inventory. Against this backdrop, the market for data center AI accelerators stands out, with NVIDIA likely to increase shipments by 53% in the second quarter, while AMD and Intel will cut them by 0.93% and 1.8%, respectively.
