The metaverse does not yet have a clear definition, but there is already an understanding that we are talking about virtual reality worlds where people will not only have fun but also work. The regulation of this direction is carried out by the Committee on the Metaverse under the China Mobile Association. According to CNBCToday, 17 new companies have become members of this body – a total of 112 organizations now belong to it. The recruits included Inly Media from Shanghai and Beijing Topnew Info & Tech from Shenzhen.

The committee was formed last October to develop standards and technology for the Metaverse; Major players include electronics giant Huawei and telecoms operator China Mobile. Typically, Beijing establishes such committees when rapid development is required in a highly regulated environment – similar actions have been taken in the blockchain space. The Chinese internet industry developed spontaneously, only to later fall under the actions of the regulators, but Beijing decided to develop the metaverse immediately with the direct involvement of the state. Chinese tech giants of the magnitude of Tencent and Alibaba have already taken an interest in related technologies, which are now exploring the possibilities of practical application of virtual reality solutions.
