ASUS presented at CES 2023 in January ROG XG Mobile – a laptop docking station with the flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. The novelty recently went on sale in several countries. For example, in Japan it is valued at around $3,000, but it is cheaper to buy in other countries.

ASUS ROG XG Mobile Dock is only compatible with ASUS ROG Flow series compact gaming laptops. The device is connected to a mobile computer through a proprietary connector of PCIe interfaces, most likely PCIe 4.0.
As part of ASUS ROG XG Mobile, not the desktop version of the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card is used, but the mobile version of the accelerator. This card uses the AD103 GPU with 9728 CUDA cores, similar to the GeForce RTX 4080 desktop model. The mobile power consumption of the GeForce RTX 4090 is 150 W and the maximum TDP is 175 W (+25 W Dynamic Boost). The base frequency of the GPU is 1590 MHz. In Boost mode, the frequency increases to 2040 MHz, which is significantly lower than the desktop version of the same graphics chip. The graphics card has 16 GB of GDDR6 memory.
Internally, ASUS ROG XG Mobile is divided into two departments. One contains a built-in 330W power supply, the second contains the graphics card itself, as well as I / O interfaces. The graphics card is cooled by a heatsink with an evaporation chamber and a tangential fan (“turbine”) that removes hot air outside the docking station.
The ASUS ROG XG Mobile is equipped with HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A + Type-C), an SD memory card reader as well as a 2.5 Gigabit network adapter and a power cable connection.
In Japan, ASUS ROG XG Mobile retails for 399,800 yen, or about $3,000 including VAT. In Canada, the novelty is valued at 2,500 Canadian dollars or 2,000 US dollars. In other words, the GeForce RTX 4090 external mobile graphics card is at least 25% more expensive than the desktop version of the GeForce RTX 4090, but at the same time has performance that is closer to the $800 desktop GeForce RTX 4070 Ti.
