“Are There Blue Dwarves in Norse Mythology?”: God of War Ragnarok Developers Responded to Black Angrboda Criticism

Last week, Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment unveiled the first full-fledged God of War Ragnarok trailer as part of the PlayStation Showcase 2021 online. Then the developers published drawings of characters, among which was Angrboda, Loki’s wife. It was made black, which caused discontent among some users. The developers responded to the criticism of the players and decided not to change their vision.

Attention: the material contains spoilers to the previous part of God of War.

The players were approached by Ragnarok Narrative Director Matt Sophos. He wrote in personal microblogging: “Are there blue dwarves in Norse mythology? Was Loki the son of a Greek demigod? Please show me where in the Edda it says that all the Jotuns were exclusively white? Let me save you time … you can’t [этого] do. I read it [книгу]”

In his statement, Matt Sophos showed that the developers do not want to quote Scandinavian mythology verbatim. At the same time, there are no clarifications in it regarding the race of people, gods and other creatures. True, the inhabitants of the Scandinavian countries were probably guided by their appearance when they wrote the epic, but the narrative director did not mention this.

God of War Ragnarok will be released in 2022 on PS4 and PS5, an exact release date has yet to be announced.
