iFixit specialists have released a disassembly video of the new iPhone 14. The most noticeable design difference from the previous generation models is that the rear glass cover has become removable. This simplifies the repair of the device and makes replacing some components cheaper.
iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens praised the iPhone 14’s design in a blog post, calling it the most significant upgrade since the iPhone X. In fact, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are the first Apple smartphones to feature a detachable back feature the iPhone was released.4S. On previous generation models, only the front panel was removed separately, while the back cover could only be detached with the motherboard, making repairs more expensive. Now the display and back panel are attached separately and can be replaced much more easily if necessary.
“This is such an important event that Apple had to announce it loudly. The iPhone has been redesigned from the inside to make repairing easiersaid Kyle Vince.
Basically, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are a sandwich of a display, a metal frame in the middle that houses most of the internal components, and a glass back. Authorized service centers can reportedly swap out the middle frame and place it between the old display and the back panel if they aren’t damaged.
The redesigned back cover of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus costs $169-$199, which is significantly less than the cost of replacing the back cover of the iPhone 13. Apple’s documentation states that after replacing the back panel, software calibration is also required, a procedure known as “system configuration”.
iFixit is preparing a teardown video for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Its appearance can be expected soon. However, it is known that the older models of Apple’s current-generation smartphones lack a removable back cover, so it can be assumed that their design is largely similar to the previous-generation models.
