Apple is asking partners to move AirPods and Beats headphones production to India

It became known that Apple for the first time asked its partners involved in the production of AirPods and Beats headphones to move part of the capacity to India. This is good news for a country that has long promised to become a major manufacturing center for an American company.

For Apple, moving part of its headphone production to India is the next step in diversifying its supply chains. In this way, the company is trying to reduce the risk of supply chain disruptions due to tensions between China and the United States and China’s strict policy on the spread of coronavirus infections. According to the source, Apple is in talks with some of its suppliers to expand production of headphones, including flagship devices, in India.

Luxshare Precision Industry and its subsidiaries, which already produce AirPods in Vietnam and China, are also planning to launch Apple headphones in India. However, Luxshare is now focused on making headphones in Vietnam, which could prevent the company from launching AirPods at the same time as competitors in India.

Recall that AirPods were one of the first Apple products to be mass-produced outside of China, facilitated by tensions between the United States and China. More than 70 million Apple headphones are produced annually, which is the company’s second largest shipment after the iPhone. It is noted that most of the production of Beats headphones was also shifted to Vietnam last year.

Moving AirPods and Beats production to India will expand Apple’s manufacturing facilities in the country that already produces the iPhone 14. Historically, only older smartphones were produced in India at Wistron companies, and production itself has been in the country ever since active 2017. Although initially Indian production was intended to serve the local market, Apple now considers the country a strategic manufacturing base, and devices exported from there go to markets in various countries, including Europe.
