Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 9 smartwatch. The device received a new S9 processor, which is significantly more powerful than its predecessors and also has higher energy efficiency. The new chip also gives the watch new functions, such as the ability to control gestures without touching the device itself.

The S9 processor has 5.6 billion transistors, which is 60% more than the previous three generations of the Apple Watch series. It features a quad-core Neural Engine as well as an updated graphics core that boosts performance by 30%. Using a neural engine, it is possible to launch the voice assistant Siri directly from the screen of a smart device, without the need for an iPhone. The new engine also processes AI tasks twice as fast as previous-generation hardware and supports the new double-tap gesture for controlling music playback, receiving and ending calls, taking photos and videos, viewing menus, and other functions . To do this, simply touch your index finger with your thumb twice – you don’t need to touch the watch itself, as shown in the photo below.
The new watch also uses Apple’s U2 ultra-wideband chip, which will significantly improve the accuracy of determining the gadget’s location in the Find My app. The maximum brightness of the Apple Watch Series 9 screen has been increased to 2000 cd/m2 – twice as much as the Apple Watch Series 8. The new version of the gadget uses a more modern version of the optical sensor that measures the user’s heart rate – this means that the watch can more accurately determine a person’s physical condition.
The aluminum models of the Apple Watch Series 9 are available in Starlight, Silver, Midnight, PRODUCT (RED) and the new pink. Steel models are available in gold, silver and dark gray (graphite).
The company has also taken the environment into account: the packaging box for the new watch is 25% smaller; This is the company’s first completely carbon neutral product, meaning its production does not increase the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere; The Sport Series bracelets are now made from 80% recycled materials. New series of straps made from the environmentally friendly material FineWoven will be presented, including in collaboration with Hermès.
The Apple Watch Series 9 smartwatch received the watchOS 10 operating system, which has a significantly redesigned user interface. The new operating system puts a lot of emphasis on widgets, watch faces and new features. The Digital Crown provides access to a range of widgets, and applications such as timers, stopwatches and players now appear as widgets.
Other updates to watchOS 10 include the ability to view FaceTime video messages and join a FaceTime group chat, track heart rate data while cycling, and monitor your emotional state in the Mindfulness app. The Compass app has been updated in watchOS 10. A “Pin” function has appeared that automatically marks the last place on the map where there was access to cellular communication. This can be particularly useful during hikes and outdoor activities. Pressing the side button on Apple Watch Series 9 opens Control Center. You can view recently used apps by double-clicking the wheel.
Of course, it’s not just Apple Watch Series 9 owners who can benefit from all of these features. The new operating system will be available for Apple Watch models from the 4th generation onwards.
The Apple Watch Series 9 starts at $399. Pre-orders for the device are being accepted starting today. The actual sales start is planned for September 22nd.
