Apple expects to sell 1.5 million of its first generation AR/VR headsets in 2023

TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a research note for investors, repeating his earlier prediction that Apple will launch an AR/VR headset in January 2023. According to the analyst, the company plans to release 1.5 million units of the new device per year, because the high cost of more than $ 2,000 puts the novelty in the category of niche gadgets.

Apple reportedly showed members of the company’s board of directors a prototype AR/VR headset in May this year, noting that the device is in the final stages of preparation for an upcoming launch. Although the company has been developing the headset for several years, overheating and performance issues have recently been identified, leading to a postponement of the release date.

Apple’s Mixed Reality Headset is expected to be based on the powerful M1 Pro-level chip used in 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops. To track hand movements, the device receives more than a dozen cameras. Also, the headset will come with 8K displays and support for eye-tracking technology.

Although Apple’s AR/VR headset hasn’t been released yet, the company is already working on a second-generation wearable version. According to Kuo, the release should be expected in the first half of 2025. According to the analyst, a cheaper model of a mixed reality headset will be presented together with him.
