In China, another graphics card was introduced on a GPU developed by a local company. Startup Moore Threads introduced the MTT S60 graphics card for desktops and workstations and the MTT S2000 server accelerator. The desktop model is even capable of running games – it was shown at the presentation in League of Legends.
The startup Moore Threads was founded and led by Zhang Jianzhong, who previously served as Vice President of NVIDIA and GM China and has been in graphics technology for 15 years. It should be noted that the startup Moore Threads has assembled a strong team of Chinese and foreign engineers and specialists, which, in conjunction with such a leader, made it possible to create real graphics cards in less than two years.
The MTT S60 graphics card is based on the first generation 12 nm MUSA GPU with 2048 cores. This novelty received 8 GB of memory. The MTT S2000 accelerator, in turn, is also based on a 12 nm GPU with the same architecture, but with 4096 cores. The chip is supplemented by 32 GB of RAM. Both new items occupy only one expansion slot.
The performance of the desktop novelty is declared as 6 Tflops, which is comparable to the performance of the Xbox One X game console. And the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card offered 6.5 Tflops. The MTT S2000, on the other hand, delivers 12 Tflops of performance – slightly less than the GeForce RTX 3060.
What exactly the architecture is is not specified, but it was found that the presented GPUs are suitable for 3D rendering, scientific data processing and process modeling, working with AI and other tasks.
Also, GPUs based on the MUSA architecture have four main engines: rendering, AI, video, and physics. The presentation showed that the graphics card can cope with the game League of Legends. Not the “heaviest” game in terms of graphics, but it still shows that the graphics card is capable of working with global illumination, anti-aliasing, shading, reflections and other technologies known from games.
MUSA-based GPUs have also been found to support a number of popular AI frameworks, including graphics acceleration, audio processing, image and speech recognition, etc. The video processing engine supports 8K and the AV1 codec, according to the developers. And the physics engine supports Unity, Houdini and Unreal.
It has also been noted that Moore Threads pays close attention to the software component, particularly drivers and ensuring graphics cards support various software. The new items were stated to be compatible with OpenCL, SYCL, CUDA, Vulkan, DirectX, OpenGL/GLES and other interfaces. The presented graphics cards can work on x86 and ARM systems with all popular Chinese operating systems.
