According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), 819,000 foldable smartphones were sold in the second quarter of this year. This is 147% more than in the second quarter of last year. However, the research firm predicts significant sales growth in the remaining two quarters of this year. In a recently released report, the DSCC said sales of foldable smartphones will grow to 2.6 million units in the third quarter and 3.8 million units in the fourth quarter.
The company’s valuation is based on an analysis of the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3, which entice users with new features such as water resistance, stylus support and a sub-screen camera. According to the report, Samsung has spent a whopping $ 2 billion on promoting new products, which indicates its serious intentions in this area.
The DSCC predicts that annual shipments of foldable smartphones will grow 232% to 7.5 million units this year. In 2022, these numbers will be 112% and 15.9 million units. The foldable smartphone industry is expected to reach 51 million units sold by 2026.
DSCC expects Samsung to hold 85% of the foldable smartphone market in 2021. Huawei will be in second place with 10%. Samsung Display is forecast to have a market share of 83.9% in the flexible display market, up from 83.5% last year. At the same time, in quantitative terms, shipments of flexible displays will grow from 3.2 million last to 10.4 million this year.
