AMD Unveils Instinct MI210 Computing Accelerator – CDNA 2 Architecture and 64GB HBM2E

AMD introduced the Instinct MI210 accelerator, designed for use in high-performance computing systems. The novelty is equipped with a single GPU, which primarily differs from the previously presented flagships Instinct MI250 and MI250X.

The Instinct MI210 is based on a graphics processor with the CDNA 2 architecture, which, unlike the gaming RDNA 2 in Radeon graphics cards, is aimed precisely at computing. A chip with 104 processing units is used, which has 6656 stream processors. On a substrate of the chips are 64 GB of HBM2E memory with a 4096-bit interface and ECC support. The storage bandwidth is 1.6 TB/s.

The accelerator is designed in the form of an expansion card with a PCIe 4.0 interface. The novelty is equipped with an Infinity Fabric interface to combine two or four cards into bundles within one system. The Instinct MI210 has only one 8-pin connector for additional power, so it cannot draw more than 225 watts. In this case, the TDP level is 300 watts. The novelty is equipped with a passive heat sink, through which server fans have to force air.

In terms of performance, AMD claims very high performance for the Instinct MI210. In the vector operations FP 32 and FP64, the speed reaches 22.6 Tflops, and in the matrix FP32 and FP64 – 45.3 Tflops. On FP16 and bfloat16 operations, the performance level reaches 181 TFlops, and on INT8 – 181 Topps. AMD also points out that the MI210 significantly outperforms its direct competitor, the NVIDIA A100 40GB, in high performance computing.
