AMD has unveiled two long-awaited next-gen graphics cards: the Radeon RX 7800 XT and the Radeon RX 7700 XT. The new products will fill a significant gap in the AMD RDNA3 family, which previously only included flagship models and entry-level gaming cards.
As part of the new graphics cards, AMD is introducing a new graphics processor called Navi 32. This fully equipped GPU has 60 processing units and a 256-bit memory bus as well as 64 MB of high-speed infinity cache.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT uses the full version of this GPU with 60 compute units (3840 stream processors), 60 RT units for ray tracing hardware acceleration and 120 AI acceleration units. The novelty is thus fewer stream processors than in the previous generation Radeon RX 6800 XT (4608 stream processors). The gaming frequency of the GPU was 2124 MHz in the reference version, the maximum boost frequency was 2430 MHz.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card is equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with 19.5 Gbps per pin, connected via a 256-bit bus. The throughput reaches 624 GB/s. The power consumption of the new graphics card is 263 watts. There are a pair of 8-pin connectors for power.
The Radeon RX 7700 XT, in turn, pleasantly surprised with its characteristics. It uses a slightly stripped down version of Navi 32, which has 54 compute units (3456 stream processors), 54 RT units, and 108 AI accelerators. That is significantly more than the previous Radeon RX 6700 XT with 40 computing units.
But in terms of memory, the novelty is similar to its predecessor. It also uses 12GB of GDDR6 memory with a 192-bit bus, increasing the memory speed to 18Gbps. This results in a throughput of 432 GB/s. It is worth noting that the Radeon RX 7700 XT has a higher power consumption compared to the RX 6700 XT – 245 W, which is 15 W more. This novelty also uses a pair of 8-pin connectors for additional power.
In terms of performance, AMD states that the Radeon RX 7800 XT is an average of 3.5% ahead of the GeForce RTX 4070 in games at 1440p and maximum graphics quality settings. And in some games, they even show an advantage of 5% to 23%, although in some games that use ray tracing, the GeForce RTX 4070 remains the palm of the hand. In the same games and at the same graphics settings, the Radeon RX 7700 XT is on average 12% faster than the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB.
AMD has confirmed that it will not release a reference version of the Radeon RX 7700 XT, although it showed such a card in images in the presentation. The card is implemented by AMD partners. In return, the Radeon RX 7800 XT will appear in the reference design with a new cooling system with two fans. Additionally, AMD has confirmed that both the Radeon RX 7800 XT and Radeon RX 7700 XT will support DisplayPort 2.1.
