AMD introduces Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor with 3D V-Cache technology

At CES 2022, AMD presented the first and only Ryzen processor with the new 3D V-Cache technology. It was called Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The manufacturer describes the novelty as the fastest gaming processor in the world.

To improve performance by increasing the cache memory, the company uses an additional 7 nm SRAM memory crystal in the new product, which is installed on a chiplet with cores using 3D assembly technology. This triples the L3 cache of the Zen 3 processor to 96 MB. The manufacturer states that the use of the hybrid technology of layering the L3 cache memory on the chiplet as part of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D enables 200 times the connection density compared to 2D chiplets as well as 15 times the density and three times higher energy efficiency compared to 3D packaging with micro protrusions.

Like the original Ryzen 7 5800X, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D uses 8 cores with support for 16 virtual threads. The difference between the chips, however, lies not only in the presence of additional 3D V-Cache, but also in their clock frequencies. But not in favor of the new processor. If the current model Ryzen 7 5800X has an operating frequency range of 3.8 to 4.7 GHz, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D works with frequencies from 3.5 to 4.5 GHz. The regular model is equipped with 32 MB L3 cache. Ryzen 7 5800X3D is equipped with 32 MB L3 cache and 64 MB 3D V cache. The nominal TDP of both processors is the same and is 105 watts.

In terms of gaming performance, measured in 1080p, AMD compares the new product with its twelve-core Ryzen 9 5900X and the 16-core Intel Core i9 12900K. Compared to the first, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor showed an average of 15% higher performance.

Compared to the Core i9 12900K in half of the gaming projects, the AMD chip showed the same performance, and in some games it even turned out to be a little faster.

AMD states that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D will be compatible with current motherboards based on AMD 400 and 500 series chipsets. The processor should go on sale in the spring.
