AMD explains why its Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT are better than the GeForce RTX 4080

Two days before the launch of the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card, AMD decided to try to divert the attention of its potential buyers and draw them to its recently introduced Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards based on the new RDNA 3 architecture. AMD wrote down the details, which it believes should convince PC owners to opt for its accelerators.

AMD has previously confirmed that the GeForce RTX 4080 will become the main competitor to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards, so the GeForce RTX 4090 will remain the fastest gaming graphics card, at least for the foreseeable future.

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference version received a VRM power subsystem with 20 phases, which is three more than the GeForce RTX 4080 model in the Founders Edition reference version.

AMD also draws attention to the fact that its new graphics cards are more compact than the competitor. They are shorter and thinner than the GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition. In addition, unlike the GeForce RTX 40 series cards, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT accelerators are equipped with DisplayPort 2.1 and USB Type-C connectors.

AMD once again recalls that, unlike its competitors, its new graphics cards do not require adapters and new power connectors. They are equipped with two standard 8-pin PCIe power connectors, making them fully compatible with most power supplies.

It’s also fair to say that AMD graphics cards in the $900-$1200 price range will offer more video memory. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX got 24GB of GDDR6 and the Radeon RX 7900 XT model got 20GB of GDDR6. The flagship GeForce RTX 4090 has 24GB of faster GDDR6X memory on board, but the recommended speed is $1600. The GeForce RTX 4080 model, in turn, received “only” 16GB of GDDR6X at a suggested price of $1200.

Unfortunately, neither AMD nor NVIDIA are willing to directly compare the performance of their accelerators. With the GeForce RTX 4080 yet to hit stores, AMD compares its RDNA 3 graphics cards to its flagship accelerator, the previous generation Radeon RX 6950 XT.

The company shared two charts. According to them, the raster performance of next-gen graphics cards in games with 4K resolution is up to 67% higher than that of the Radeon RX 6950 XT, and the performance of the lighting tracking technology in new graphics cards is up to 82% higher than that of the flagship Radeon based on the RDNA-2 architecture.

There is still a month until the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT go on sale. Their release is scheduled for December 13th.
