AMD drivers reduced the power consumption of the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX in games, but only with a frame rate cap

The Adrenalin 22.12.1 (RX 7900) video driver released in December improved the power efficiency of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards. This is reported by the German edition of ComputerBase, which compared the power consumption of these accelerators under minimal load and in games with older and newer drivers.

At the time of the release of the new generation Radeon graphics cards, reviewers in their articles noted that the new products consume unreasonable amounts of power even at low loads, and in this indicator they even surpass the previous generation Radeon models. It should be noted that graphics cards were then tested with a print driver provided only for media and bloggers. AMD has since released two official consumer versions of the software, Adrenalin 22.12. Adrenaline 23.1.1. They are only for Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards.

If before the release of the December driver Adrenalin 22.12.1 (RX 7900) when playing videos from YouTube, the Radeon RX 7900 XT model consumed 71 W and the RX 7900 XTX model 81 W, then with the December driver the power consumption of these graphics cards under the same conditions dropped to 46 and 54 W, respectively. Despite this, the power consumption of new products is still higher than that of Radeon RX 6900 XT (34 W on YouTube) and GeForce RTX 4080 (30 W).

It is worth noting that the press release for the Adrenalin 22.12.1 (RX 7900) driver only mentioned optimizing the power consumption of the Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX during video playback, but said nothing about improving their power efficiency in games. However, as the ComputerBase experiment showed, the power consumption of graphics cards in games also fell with the new driver. And very noticeable. Specifically, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX saw up to a 57% increase in power efficiency in Doom Eternal at 1440p, while the Radeon RX 7900 XT saw a 34% increase in power efficiency in the same game at the same graphics settings. In other words, the cards consume 57 to 90 watts less than before. However, this trend can be observed on one condition when the maximum frame rate limit is enabled in the game settings.

When using the 4K resolution, the difference in power consumption between games with the old and new drivers becomes less noticeable.

Also, testing of graphics cards by a German publication did not reveal any changes in the power consumption of the Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX after the release of the latest version of the Adrenalin 23.1.1 (RX 7900) driver compared to the December version.
