AMD believes the Radeon RX 6500 XT won’t attract miners’ attention

AMD will begin shipping its entry-level gaming graphics card, the Radeon RX 6500 XT, on January 19th. The recommended cost is $ 200. But against the backdrop of the ongoing shortage of accelerators, caused in part by crypto miners and resellers sweeping all available deals off the shelves, it has been impossible to find graphics cards at affordable prices for over a year.

Whether the Radeon RX 6500 XT will be any different depends in part on the volume of its shipments, but AMD also claims to have developed this graphics accelerator in such a way that it looks less attractive in the eyes of cryptocurrency miners. Speaking to the press about the latest announcements at CES 2022, AMD Radeon VP Laura Smith spoke about how the Radeon RX 6500 XT has been “optimized” for gamers.

“We really optimized this accelerator to be a gaming accelerator in the target market. This is quite noticeable when you look at its properties. Despite the fact that the card only has 4GB of memory, this amount is enough for most AAA-class games. At the same time, the graphics card does not look attractive to those who plan to use the accelerator for operations with blockchain or mining.Smith noticed.

If you look at the properties of the Radeon RX 6500 XT, it is noticeable that the card deteriorates even against the background of the entry-level Radeon RX 5500 XT of the previous generation. First, the new accelerator doesn’t have 8, but only 4 GB of memory. Second, the Radeon RX 6500 XT’s memory bus is half as wide as its predecessor (64-bit versus 128-bit). Such a memory bus width can only be found today in inexpensive discrete mobile graphics cards of the GeForce MX 450. However, the memory bus width of the latest generation of desktop graphics accelerators was at least 128 bits. Less memory and the reduced bandwidth have a negative effect on the efficiency of the graphics card when mining Ethereum.

To compensate for the slow memory interface and to help the card keep up with offers at the level of the Radeon RX 570 and Radeon RX 5500 XT, the manufacturer has increased the frequencies of the Radeon RX 6500 XT GPU. The maximum GPU frequency of the new accelerator is 2815 MHz. For comparison: the chip in the Radeon RX 5500 XT runs at 1845 MHz.

After the sales start, we will find out whether such technical solutions from AMD will help make gamers aware of the Radeon RX 6500 XT and deter miners from it.
