For now, the untitled game will be an MMO adventure set in the open world of Middle-earth. Amazon promises a new interpretation of the franchise and “Favorite Stories” from the trilogy The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

IN IGN Statement Amazon Games Vice President Christoph Hartmann clarified that the new game has nothing to do with The Lord of the Rings Online (2007) and the discontinued Lord of the Rings MMORPG in 2021.

The project is led by the Californian company Amazon Games Orange County, which previously created another MMO for Amazon, New World. Development is still at an early stage, so there is no information on a release date yet. Release is expected on PC and consoles.

If Amazon Games and Embracer Group’s new Lord of the Rings MMO is one of five franchise games in development at the Swedish holding company, then it’s scheduled to be released before March 31, 2024.
