Dell has introduced the 17-inch Alienware M17 R5 gaming laptop. The novelty is based on the latest Ryzen 6000 (Rembrandt) processors and is equipped with Radeon RX 6000M graphics accelerators. The reason for choosing the AMD platform is simple: the Alienware M17 R5 is part of the AMD Advantage program, which includes support for proprietary AMD SmartShift Max technologies, SmartAccess memory, and SmartAccess graphics to maximize performance.
The SmartShift Max technology enables, for example, laptops with processors AMD and Radeon graphics Efficiently distribute power between the central processing unit and the graphics accelerator in situations where it is needed. SmartAccess Memory Technology, in turn, gives the processor the ability to use the entire graphics card memory array at the same time, and SmartAccess Graphics is designed to automatically redistribute the load between the integrated and separate laptop graphics, increasing performance and power consumption of the latter.
As the heart of the Alienware M17 R5, the manufacturer is ready to offer an 8-core and 16-thread Ryzen 7 6800H with a frequency of up to 4.7 GHz, the same 8-core Ryzen 9 6900HX with a frequency of up to to 4.9 GHz or a flagship eight-core Ryzen 9 6980HX with a frequency of up to 5.0 GHz. As a graphics subsystem, the laptop can be equipped with a Radeon RX 6700M or Radeon RX 6850M XT with 12 GB of memory and a maximum heat pack of 175 W thanks to SmartShift Max technology. Alternatively, graphics cards from the GeForce RTX 30 series are also offered, starting with the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti model, but in this case there is no support for AMD proprietary technologies.
The Alienware M17 R5 is offered with two display options. One offers a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, a frequency of 165 or 360 Hz and support for AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync technologies. In the second case, the screen has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and support for AMD FreeSync and AMD SmartAccess Graphics technologies.
The laptop can also be equipped with 64 GB DDR5-4800 RAM and two solid state drives for a total of 4 TB. The manufacturer optionally offers the installation of a mechanical keyboard on low-profile CherryMX switches. The set of external connections on the laptop includes a 2.5 Gbit / s LAN, a combined 3.5 audio jack, three USB 3.2 ports Gen 1 Type-A ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and an HDMI 2.1.
Prices for the Alienware M17 R5 laptop start at $ 1,600. The laptop will go on sale in the spring.
