Italian premium car brand Alfa Romeo has started using NFT technologies in the production and maintenance of cars. The first “tokenized” model will be the Tonale hybrid crossover with the possibility of external charging.
NFTs are unique digital assets that cannot be replaced – information is verified and stored using blockchain technologies, making it impossible to alter their data, hack the system or deceive them. With the help of NFT, digital artworks and other digital “goods” are protected, now including cars.
According to Alfa Romeo, now owned by Stellantis, the Tonale NFT will serve as the vehicle’s certificate upon purchase and the record will then be updated with secure information about the vehicle throughout its lifecycle. As a result, the user receives a secure document storing data on various aspects of the car’s maintenance – which should have a positive impact on its “residual value” over time. In order to record data, the car must be serviced by a certified dealer.
The 2023 model year hybrid Tonale is indeed the beginning of the end of sales of internal combustion engine Alfa Romeo cars. The brand intends to only sell electric vehicles by the end of 2027.
It is known that for the US Tonale a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 256 hp will be offered, and the hybrid version will get a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 272 hp. and an electric motor with a battery that allows you to drive about 50 km without recharging. Orders for Tonale will be taken from the first quarter of 2023, the price will be announced later.
