Acura explains how EV design is changing: “You can add playfulness and move wheels”

The massive spread of electric vehicles ushered in a new era in automotive design, as a different layout of the powertrain gave engineers more freedom and some rudiments like a fake grille became a thing of the past. Acura believes mirrors and protruding door handles will follow, and EVs don’t tie designers to specific wheel positions.

It is possible that the electric firstborn Acura will receive the series designation ZDX.

Acura Brand Manager Jon Ikeda was very positive about the design changes that came with the move to electric: “It allowed us to add playful touches and move the wheels freely, which for automakers symbolizes freedom.”. In the days of 12 or 16-cylinder internal combustion engine cars, the so-called “prestige gap” between the front fender and the front door dictated the size of the engine and lengthened the bonnet, making the car more expensive. Well, as a company representative explains, internal combustion engines are a thing of the past and a very interesting time is coming for car designers.

Also, false grilles have lost their functional load, since the elements of the power plant of electric vehicles do not need to be cooled so intensively. The Acura Concept uses the illuminated area around the faux grille primarily for entertainment. Protruding door handles and rear-view mirrors will also be a thing of the past, according to Acura representatives. The former are recessed into the door on many EVs to improve aerodynamics and increase power reserve on a single charge, while the latter give way to cameras that are wider in functionality than traditional mirrors. However, such an exchange is not legally permitted in all countries and regions, so that mirrors cannot be abruptly dispensed with everywhere.

A steering wheel in the form of a steering wheel has already been tested on new versions of the Tesla Model S and Model X, but such an innovation caused a lot of criticism from car owners in the absence of progressive electric power steering. It is quite difficult to maneuver quickly with such controls at low speeds.

Cooperation of Honda Motor with General Motors in the US market does not end with the release of two electric crossovers of the first brand in 2024 and the simultaneous appearance of the Acura electric car. By 2027, the partners want to jointly develop cheaper electric vehicles for the North American market. Honda’s joint venture with LG Energy Solution will spend $4.4 billion to build a US factory to make traction batteries for 400,000 electric vehicles a year. The corresponding platform will go into operation in 2025. According to Acura representatives, the Japanese company will then focus on the use of solid electrolyte batteries. The latter should increase the electricity storage density and improve the fire protection of electric vehicles.
